Sepsis Stories
KW v Gynaecologist
Following the procedure, the Plaintiff developed complications and became unwell. Anti-biotic therapy was commenced, and the Plaintiff was discharged home but she continued to suffer from significant symptoms. She was readmitted to hospital suffering from severe sepsis and septic shock.
She was treated in hospital and sent home again but she deteriorated further and was readmitted to hospital 24 hours later when she was operated on and vaginal mesh was removed.
Histopathology investigations confirmed chronic inflammation because of a foreign body and cultures grew enterococcus faecium, enterococcus faecalis and coagulase negative staphylococcus.
Having investigated the matter on behalf of the Plaintiff, our expert gynaecologist and colo-rectal expert advised that the sepsis was caused because of rectal trauma during the Posterior Repair Fixation and Mesh Procedure.
A full defence was filed but the case settled for a significant sum shortly before the trial following settlement negotiations.
